[ That is some very well-meant salt in the tiny papercut of Kostos' concern. Nell and Gareth seem to have forgiven, maybe even forgotten, that he won't follow them anywhere, that he walked away. And he doesn't deserve that. Especially not when he isn't sure he wouldn't do it again.
[ Of course Gareth remembers. He remembers that Kostos left first, then Nell. He remembers that the two of them are both willing to leave him if they fancy it. He remembers that he wasn't even a willing participant in their reunion, that if it hadn't been for the shard, they might have never met again, or under circumstances much less pleasant. That this, just like every other stage of his life, is ephemeral, fleeting, and subject to change at a moment's notice.
But they accepted him as soon as he showed up. They continued to help him, and hide his secret, even with how dangerous it is. Trust is a hard thing built, and Gareth is loathe to give up on the few scraps of it that he has.
So rather than try to ruin the moment with stupid joke to lighten the air, he simply mumbles a noise of gratitude, and shuts the crystal off.
At the least, the stay here feels a little less miserable now. ]
